TAYLOR, Mich. (WJBK) -- Taylor Police Corporeal Matthew Edwards was shot and killed in the line of duty in July of 2010. Now a friend is accused of stealing the officer's retired shotgun.
Andrew Voelkner, formerly an officer in Taylor, is accused of taking the gun home to Farmington Hills. It cost him his job, and now he's in trouble with the law.
Taylor Police Commander John Blair said under no circumstances was it okay for the gun to be in anyone's home.
We're told officers removed all the weapons from Voelkner's home after a domestic situation last year. No charges were filed in that incident and it was a verbal spat. The serial number on a shotgun that was taken revealed it was Edwards'.
Voelkner's attorney told us this is a tough time for the former officer, but said the facts will come out. His client is innocent and will be exonerated.
Voelkner is facing charges including larceny, felony firearm and concealing a stolen firearm.
"How it got there, details behind that, we're going to have to wait before we disclose that. Obviously, the adjudication of the case is of paramount important to us," Blair said.
Voelkner will be in court on December 10 when he will be formally arraigned on the charges.

Detroit ditto heads rejoice. Your leader is interested in news in Detroit, at least enough to qualify a report on a large Powerball jackpot as more proof that 'low-information outreach' is working.
