An investigation by Consumer Reports released this week found high rates of a bacterium that can cause food poisoning, especially in children, in some pork products from various major and store brands.

According to the report, a majority of the bacteria were found to be resistant to antibiotics.

"Antibiotics are routinely fed to healthy animals at low levels," Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Director of Safety and Sustainability at Consumer Reports said in a statement.

"This practice promotes the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria which are a major public health concern."

Dr. Rangan said the resistant bacteria is more difficult to treat and can lead to increased suffering and costs.

Consumer Reports says it tested 148 samples of meat from pork chops and 50 from ground pork.
