3 PA Probation Employees Fired After Probe Into Murder Of Philly Cop

HARRISBURG, Pa. -

Three Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole employees were fired after an internal investigation into the state's supervision of the man accused of killing a Philadelphia Police officer.

In a statement sent Friday, PBPP Chairman Michael C. Potteiger announced the termination of the three employees involved in the supervision of Rafael Jones, the man accused of killing Officer Moses Walker Jr. in August.

"We are all saddened by the senseless death of Officer Walker," Chairman Potteiger said in the statement.

"These employees were terminated due to violations of board procedures, the board's Code of Conduct and shortcomings in the manner in which Jones was supervised."

The PBPP says the investigation was initiated after the August shooting.

In addition to the terminations, the PBPP announced several changes as a result of its review.

The PBPP says it is making changes to its special probation procedures to ensure that sentencing judges are aware when an offender with a consecutive special probation sentence has been denied parole and is approaching his maximum sentence date in prison.

The option of using GPS technology to provide parole agents with another tool for parolee management will also be considered, the PBPP said.

Potteiger has also ordered a review of agency processes and procedures.
