South Street Seaport redevelopment on hold after storm damage

The plans for South Street Seaport to undergo a major redevelopment designed to lure locals, more tourists and revitalize the area are still planned despite the heavy storm damage.

Hurricane Sandy has destroyed most of the buildings, including the South Street Seaport Museum, and may have caused structural damage to Pier 17.

The estimated cost of the damage is $22 million.

Stores are expected to be closed for months, a number of them until the spring. Developer Howard Hughes had planned to begin redeveloping a mall in 2013 and to open in 2015.

According to the Wall Street Journal, divers are now examining piles underneath the Pier 17 to determine if they sustained damage. The pier's mall did not flood and if the pier is found to be damage-free, then the area can open before the end of the year.

Almost all of South Street Seaport's shops, restaurants and tourist attractions are closed.
