DETROIT (AP) -- A former chief of staff to ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has filed for bankruptcy in Georgia.
The Detroit News reports Monday that Christine Beatty, who moved to Atlanta in 2010, is facing almost $400,000 in debt.
Beatty's lawyer Jeffrey Morganroth says she didn't want to file for bankruptcy, but was "left with no choice" because of her financial difficulties.
Beatty and the married Kilpatrick both served jail sentences for lying in court about an affair following a text-messaging sex scandal. A federal corruption trial for Kilpatrick is ongoing in Detroit.
According to Beatty's bankruptcy filing in October, she owed $60,000 in delinquent federal taxes, $220,000 in mortgage debt, consumer bills and restitution to Detroit.
Morganroth says paying the restitution, currently estimated at $85,000, is a "high priority."
