Text messaging celebrates 20th birthday

Posted: Updated:

It's probably fair to say Americans love their phones about as much and maybe more than their cars.  And those who love that smart phone do a lot of text messaging.

The popular form of communication celebrated a big milestone on Monday.

"It wasn't until the 10th anniversary of text messaging that I realized like 'wow, yeah, that was ten years ago, that was a big thing'. And here we are 10 years later and text messaging has gone on to even bigger and better things now," said Neil Papworth.

At 22 years old, Papworth sent the first text message and he's still shocked at how popular the service has become.

So what did the first ever text message say?  Merry Christmas!

Video: FOX 10's Kristin Anderson has the details.
