Sen. Toomey Proposing 'Clothe A Homeless Hero Act'

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey is trying to get help for homeless veterans and their families.

On Monday morning, the Republican from Pennsylvania gave "Good Day" a preview of what he was proposing later in the morning.

Toomey wants Congress to enact the "Clothe a Homeless Hero Act." It would require distribution of clothing left at airports to homeless vets.

The bill would require the Transportation Safety Administration to work with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other charities to distribute the clothing.

Statistics show that 75,000 vets are homeless on any given night, and 20,000 vets of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have been homeless within the last 5 years.

Toomey also talked about the looming "fiscal cliff" debate during his Monday morning appearance on "Good Day."

Then, the senator held his 10 a.m. news conference to formally announce the bill at the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service & Education Center.
