Cardinals may choose new locale for training

Posted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -

Could the Arizona Cardinals be flying the coop? The city of Glendale is trying to lure their training camp away from Flagstaff -- and if they're successful if could cost Flagstaff millions in lost tourist dollars.

Restaurant owners and hotels are all concerned. If the cards leave Flagstaff, it's a $10 million hit to their economy.

Flagstaff needs the Cardinals, but do the Cardinals need Flagstaff? Right now, the Cards are playing the field, looking at all options -- and that includes possibly moving their training camp to Glendale.

"We've housed their marketing staff, their cheerleaders, and all the fans so this hotel would be very upset to see them leave," says Gina Leingang of Courtyard Marriott.

Gina Leingang runs the Courtyard Marriott in Flagstaff. She says the hotel nearly sold out during cards camp.

"You'll see Cardinals jerseys everywhere, it'll be very red and white in here."

For 25 years, the Cards have trained in Flagstaff. This was the last year of the team's contract with NAU.

During the red and white scrimmage, 14,000 fans come to the field in Flagstaff to watch the game. Most of them are from the valley.

"They stay in hotels, they eat in restaurants, they purchase things so that would be a hit economically," says Tom Bauer of NAU.

Tom Bauer says NAU is working with the city of Flagstaff and the Chamber to Commerce to put together a proposal to keep the Cards in Flag.

"We've got Sports Illustrated, other national media outlets who ranked us in the top for training facilities."

NAU officials says they just spent $26 million renovating the sky dome. But is that enough?

"We think we have a fair offer for them and well see what happens," says Bauer.

He could be right. Both the Cards and NAU are still actively working together to come up with a deal.

We're told the Cardinals are really hoping they can cut some of their expenses in Flagstaff. That includes food and housing.
