Hunger Games hair stylist visits Scottsdale salon

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

When it hit theatres last March, the Hunger Games was an instant box office hit. The movie was noted for its elaborate costumes and fashion, and Wednesday, a hairdresser from the movie visited the valley.

Cherry Petenbrink, a hairdresser and colorist for Joico, is the artist who created the looks.

"Just kind of networking. I have a friend who works in the industry, she got the job as department head, came to me and said hey it's a huge amount of color, I'd love for you to be the one to do it," says Petenbrink.

Petenbrink was in Scottsdale at Dre's Hair Salon to teach up-and-coming stylists like Jocelyn Bourlier tricks of the trade.

"I want to learn I guess, just tips and tricks and stuff on how she did the color and applying it and things like that," says Bourlier.

"It's kind of a hip new thing to have the bright colors so if someone asks for it, I know what to do," says salon owner Andre Aronica.

Petenbrink mixed semi-permanent out of this world intense shades like magenta, teal and copper, to play up the theme of Hunger Games. To bring the characters to life was an experience she will never forget.

"To be able to be part of such a big group of people that created such an amazing movie, you feel pretty privileged."

Petenbrink says she started working on the cuts and the styles of these bold and beautiful wigs well over a year before the Hunger Games even premiered. She's already working on her next project but has to keep that one top secret too.

The styles Petenbrink created will be showcased during a hair show at a local beauty school on Thursday.
