First medical marijuana dispensary opens in Glendale

Updated:
GLENDALE, Ariz. -

Two years after Arizona voters approved Prop 203, medical marijuana is legally handed out for the first time. A pot dispensary opened its doors today in Glendale.

Dozens of medical marijuana patients lined up Thursday morning to legally get their medicine at Arizona Organix -- at 53rd and Glendale Avenues.

The first person to get his hands on the drug was Mike Gonzalez.

"Very clean place, they have a big selection you know quality's really good too as well, so I'll definitely be back here again," says Gonzalez. He has a neck tumor.

Gonzalez says he paid $110 for a quarter-ounce of "OG Kush." the dispensary's web site says it carries three other strains of marijuana, including "Purple Urkle," "Romulan," and "Sweet Lemon Skunk."

"It's a momentous day for Arizona, it's a good day for voters and it's a good day for patients so I'm here to be happy and celebrate," says Ryan Hurley, the dispensary's attorney.

Once patients arrive, they check in at the counter. After their medical marijuana cards are verified, they enter the dispensing area where they meet with a "bud tender" to pick which kinds of pot they want.

"Smell it, touch it feel it do whatever they want out of the sample jars, and once they've discerned what they want we'll fill the orders in a safe and secure dispensing area that is not open to the public," says Bill Myer, co-owner Arizona Organix.

Patients dealing with various conditions say marijuana works wonders.

"It helps relax me, it helps ease the pain tremendously so I don't have to take as many pills and things like that, which are far more dangerous to me than marijuana is," says patient Charles Everett, who suffers pain from an assault.

"It helps to take that pain away, also the stress and also kind of the depression that comes along with that can also really affect you and it helps to do with that as well," says Ben Williams, who was hit by a car.

The dispensary is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Statement by County Attorney Bill Montgomery

The marijuana dispensary that opened in Glendale today does so in violation of federal law and, at best, under a cloud of uncertainty with regard to state law until the status of the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act is conclusively determined by Arizona courts. Although a trial court has ruled that the AMMA is not in conflict with federal law, our office is currently seeking appellate review. Accordingly, the individuals operating this site are gambling with their money and their liberty.
