PAULSBORO, N.J. -
Just over one week after a train derailment and chemical spill, authorities say they're beginning the process of bringing an end to evacuations in Paulsboro.
The "Unified Command" leading the emergency response says home-by-home air quality checks began Friday at noon. They're being conducted on a schedule according to proximity to the derailment.
This is the first step in the process of letting residents return. It has been initiated because no vinyl chloride has been detected in air at the evacuation zone over a 24-hour period.
Air quality experts will be available to accompany residents to their homes and to test for vinyl chloride. Negative tests will allow the buildings to be reoccupied.
Residents may also decline the police-accompanied air quality checks if they sign a form.
Details on the complete process for allowing the returns are laid out on a new website created by authorities managing the situation on Friday. That website is www.PaulsboroResponse.com.
In addition to checking online, residents may also call the community assistance hotline at (800) 230-7049 or see the printed map at the Community Assistance Center in the Paulsboro firehouse, located at 1502 Swedesboro Avenue.
