Off-duty officer shot during attempted robbery

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

An off-duty Chicago police officer has been released from the hospital and is home recovering Monday night after being shot during an attempted robbery overnight.

Police don't have much information to go on, but are intensely working the case. The officer is staying at an undisclosed location, but when FOX 32 News' Craig Wall stopped by to check on his progress, he was chatting with fellow officers with a bandage on his injured wrist. It appeared he was in much better condition and spirits than earlier Monday morning when his world got a little chaotic.

Alma Rios thought she was hearing firecrackers going off about 12:30 a.m. because the South West Side neighborhood where an off-duty police officer was shot is a quiet one.

"About 12:30 at night, I heard about five or six pops go off," Rios explained. "I woke up because I heard a guy yelling and I looked outside the window and I see a guy running back and forth across the street and he's like, I don't want to die in front of my wife and kids, I need someone over here."

Chicago police said the 34-year-old officer, who is a 10-year veteran, was shot twice as he got out of the car with his young child. One bullet shattered his left wrist, the other went through his chest, but caused no significant injuries.

The officer told investigators a man tried to rob him.

"He's face to face with a guy with a gun, he drew his firearm and he exchanged gunshots with him," said Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy.

Mike Leal woke up to the shots and called out to the officer from his window.

"I asked, you okay? He said, ‘I'm a police officer, I've been shot.' But I think he was talking to someone on the phone already," says Leal.

The officer is described as quiet, but nice. Police vow to do what it takes to catch the gunman.

"We're going to catch the guy. That's the message and people need to know that they are accountable," said McCarthy. "We're gonna hold him accountable and we're gonna find him when these things happen."

Police are on the lookout for a silver or grey 4-door Chevy Impala or Mitsubishi hatchback. The suspect is described as a male hispanic 30-35 years old about 5'8'' with short hair and a fade on the top.

The wounded officer told detectives that he may have hit the would-be robber in the exchange of gunfire.
