Mummers Vow To March On After Warehouse Fire

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A Mummers brigade will tour the extent of the damage Tuesday after a four-alarm fire ripped through a warehouse holding all of their props just weeks before the big parade.

The fire broke out Monday at Second and Wharton streets in South Philadelphia.

The blaze came a little over three weeks before the annual Mummers Parade on New Year's Day. The warehouse held props for the Fralinger String Band, although costumes and musical instruments were stored elsewhere and spared.

String band members are left wondering if they will be able to rebuild and replace all the props in time for the parade.

FOX 29's Stephanie Esposito is reporting live Tuesday morning from the scene with more on the impact this will have on New Year's Day.

Authorities said they are continuing to investigate an unlicensed auto shop that had also been operating in the same warehouse. The operation had already been fined earlier this year.

One elderly woman was injured during the blaze, and her home was destroyed.

The American Red Cross said it responded to the scene to assist at least six families from five homes.

As of early Tuesday, power had been restored to all but four homes after the fire.
