Holy Batmobile, Batman!

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

The original Batmobile owned by George Barris will be auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson car auction in January.

The 42nd annual Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson auction will feature the only 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car, heavily modified by legendary customizer George Barris.

The original 1966 Batmobile, shown in the live action TV series and the movie adaptation with Adam West, will be auctioned off on Jan. 19.

"It is truly a world icon, the Batmobile," said Craig Barrett of the Barrett-Jackson Car Auction. "[It has] All the gadgets you saw in the TV show, the bat radar, the bat phone."

The Batmobile has been part of Barris' personal collection since he first bought it for $1 in 1965. This will be the first time the car has been up for sale since then.

The car was first featured with a red paint job in "It Started with a Kiss", starring Debbie Reynolds and Glenn Ford.

Barris bought the car and kept it in his garage for several years until 20th Century Fox Television and Greenway Productions asked him to make a Batmobile for their TV series. $15,000 was spent modifying it -- and now it will probably go for a price in the millions.

The Batmobile will go on auction Saturday, Jan. 19. There are copies out there, but this is the one and only original. Several museums are interested, including the Smithsonian.
