Tempe Middle School students give Santa a helping hand

TEMPE, Ariz. -

We hear a lot about Arizonans helping each other during the holidays.

On Wednesday, a group of Tempe Middle School students raised money to buy presents for children in their own district, making sure other classmates have gifts under their Christmas tree.

The total on these receipts topped $14,000.  That money was raised by the students who are giving Santa a hand this holiday season.

Lexi Hayden, daughter of FOX 10's Troy Hayden, says she picked out presents she would like to find under the tree.

"Things that I would like for Christmas because we're buying for our same age group, so I was just thinking of things that other kids would like."

Not only did the students pick out the toys themselves, but many used their own money to buy them.

"I used a lot of my allowance and I asked a lot of people around my neighborhood if they would donate," said Core Zarembra, who donated $75.

Another student, J. Iannone, said, "I got some from my savings for like what I really want, but I knew that people out there, they might want what I want."

The toys will be taken to the Kyrene Resource Center so parents and guardians who can't afford to buy presents will be able to pick them up before the holiday.

"It makes me feel like the real spirit of Christmas," said Maya Gordon.

Iannone adds, "I want them to feel happy and joyful for the whole day."

"It makes me feel really good.  It makes me feel like I've made an impact on my community," said Hayden.

The gifts will make Christmas morning memorable for more than 1,000 students.

You can drop off a toy donation at the Kyrene District Office during business hours this week.
