2 People Shot On SEPTA's Market-Frankford Line Train

PHILADELPHIA -

Police are looking for the gunman who fired into a crowded SEPTA Market-Frankford Elevated Line car Wednesday night and hit two people with one shot.

The shooting happened on the Market-Frankford Elevated Line at 46th Street in West Philadelphia around 10:30 last night.

According to police, two teenagers began joking with a 35-year-old man over sports teams, but it soon turned into an argument.

When the teens – described as being about 17- and 19-years-old – started using profanity, the older man told them to watch their language.

Another 30-year-old man chimed in, telling the group to calm down.

As the teens exited the train at 46th Street, one of them turned around and fired one shot through the still open doors into the train, police said.

The 35-year-old man wearing the jersey was shot in the stomach. The bullet went through his back and hit the other man in the leg.

The train continued on to 52nd street, which is where the victims got off and police were called.

One victim was reported to be in critical condition Thursday morning, while the other was in stable condition.

Police said there were about 35 people on the train. Among them was a SEPTA police officer who was a few cars back. He heard the gunshot and ran up to help, but the teens were already gone by that time.

"We have a young man who was celebrating a victory from a team he follows, and unfortunately we've got two young idiots who don't know how to control their anger and don't know how to respect themselves and respect society," Lt. John Walker, of the police department's Southwest Detectives said.

"Instead of just letting this argument die off, walking off the train, and doing what you're supposed to do, they take a wild shot into a train that's loaded with people of all ages, male and female," Walker added. "And we're fortunate to get out of this situation with two people shot, with them both going to survive this. So, these kids with this reckless behavior, it has to stop. And people have to really come forward when we have situations like this and help the police department put these people behind bars."

Police are now reviewing the surveillance video on the train and on the platform. They plan to release that footage later on Thursday and hope to make a quick arrest.

The two teens were wearing gray hooded sweatshirts, with one wearing a blue vest on top of his sweatshirt. They were last seen running off down Market Street.

Anyone with information is asked to call to call police. You can remain anonymous. The number is 215-686-TIPS.
