Senator Menendez intern arrested

Posted: Updated:

Washington (AP)- U.S. Senator Robert Menendez says he knows nothing about whether the arrest of his unpaid intern by immigration authorities was delayed.

An official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, tells the Associated Press the Homeland Security Department instructed federal agents not to arrest the 18-year-old intern until after Election Day.

Luis Zavaleta of Peru is facing deportation. He is a registered sex offender.

The teen was arrested by N.J. ICE officials on Dec. 6.

Menendez, D-NJ, won re-election in November with 58 percent of the vote.
