PHILADELPHIA -

JetBlue Airways announced Thursday morning that it will offer its first flights out of Philadelphia International Airport starting in the spring.

The airline will offer five daily, nonstop flights between Philly – JetBlue's 78th city – and Boston's Logan International Airport.

To celebrate, JetBlue is offering a special $17.76 "independence fare" for flights during the three-week period after Memorial Day.

The airline touted its new flights as a "convenient business schedule with fares accessible to all," while also praising its own crew service, seating area legroom, free and unlimited snacks and drinks as well as free live entertainment.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter was quoted in a news release as saying, "We are absolutely thrilled that travelers in the Philadelphia region will now have convenient access to JetBlue, an airline that has distinguished itself with the kind of innovation and customer service that we value. I want to congratulate JetBlue for recognizing the value of doing business with the greater Philadelphia region and business community."

In other aviation news, change may be in the air for frequent-flier programs.

Southwest, Virgin America, and JetBlue think money is more important than loyalty. That's why they give passengers points based on the dollars they spend.

The pressure is now on for the legacy carriers – like Delta, American, United and US Airways – to perhaps follow suit, the FOX Business Network is reporting Thursday.
