Salvation Army offers shopping deals for holidays

ATLANTA -

It's the season for some serious shopping. But even if you missed Black Friday, there are still some deals to be had. Some of those deals can be found at the Salvation Army in downtown Atlanta. The store that literally has it all.

"You can find everything from furniture to clothing to household items even down to the smallest book or bible that you may be looking for," said Kim Hall of the Salvation Army.

For those in the know, the thrift store is the go-to place for that quality, but inexpensive item. At the Salvation Army in downtown Atlanta, it's no different. As many as 10,000 to 15,000 new items go in the store daily.

While traditional retail stores offer just as many brand new options, thrifting expert Daniel Troppy says your best bargain can be found second hand during the holidays.

"You want to hit the thrift stores now and January because it's coming. It's coming at them at such an alarming rate, they're getting so much donations," said thrifting expert Daniel Troppy.

At the Salvation Army, crews spend their days taking donations and sorting it all. Troppy says now's the time to get spring clothing items. And if you're in the market for furniture and electronics, there's no better place to start than a thrift store. You might be surprised at how modern the selections are.

"As technology changes, everything is coming in. So we receive everything from flat screen TVs, to surround sound systems to computers. We never know from one day to the next what it's going to be," said Troppy.

They're one of the few thrift stores that still come to your house and pick up large furniture donations. They clean and repair all the pieces before putting them on the showroom floor. Most thrift store profits support a good cause, making donating or shopping at them during the holidays, a win-win.

"You can clean out that old stuff to make room for the new items and new toys that you're giving your children for Christmas. What better way to help someone and help yourself with a tax write off as well," said Hall.

Salvation Army representatives say because of the uptick in the economy, more people are buying new items this Christmas and donations are down. They say you can now get your tax receipt online for all donations. For more information, click here.
