Group plans more anti-Muslim ads in subways

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - The group that posted inflammatory ads in New York City's subway system earlier this year plans to put up more ads.

The American Freedom Defense Initiative told The New York Times  it has purchased space beside the roughly 220 clocks that hang above subway platforms in stations throughout the city.

The ads depict the twin towers engulfed in flames and a quote attributed to the Koran: "Soon shall we cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers."

The group's earlier ads equated Muslims or Palestinians with savages. They were displayed in 10 stations in September.

Transit officials said they were reviewing the request. The MTA recently approved similar ads from the group at Metro-North Railroad stations.

The agency has also sold space to groups that disagree with those messages.
