The U.S. Department of Defense said an army soldier from Long Island has died in Afghanistan.

Sergeant 1st Class Kevin E. Lipari of Baldwin lost his life Friday while serving in Logar province.

The 39-year-old soldier was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, based in Bamberg, Germany.

Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano ordered flags on County government buildings to be flown at half-staff in honor of Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Lipari.

"I join our citizens in mourning the loss of Sgt. 1st Class Kevin E. Lipari and send my deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and fellow soldiers," County Executive Mangano said. "Nassau County honors Sgt. 1st Class Kevin E. Lipari's supreme sacrifice and we will be forever grateful for his and his fellow soldiers dedication to our great nation."

Defense officials did not immediately provide any details about Lipari's death, which is under investigation.
