A soldier from New York has died from wounds suffered in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced.

Staff Sgt. Nicholas J. Reid, 26, of Rochester, died December 13 in Landstuhl, Germany. He was wounded in Sperwan Village, Afghanistan, on December 9 when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive, the military said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed flags on state government buildings to be flown at half-staff on December 20 in Reid's honor.

"Along with all New Yorkers, I mourn the death of Staff Sgt. Reid and extend my condolences to his family, friends and fellow soldiers," Cuomo said. "We will remember his sacrifice and his dedication to our nation."

Reid was assigned to the 53rd Ordnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), 3rd Ordnance Battalion (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), based out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.
