NRA Says It's 'Heartbroken' Over Newtown, Conn. School Shooting

The National Rifle Association on Tuesday released a statement on the Newtown, Conn. school shooting, marking the first time the group has publicly addressed the shooting.

The NRA posted the statement on its Facebook page Tuesday afternoon.

In the statement, the group said it was "shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown."

The NRA says it is prepared to offer "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

The group says it plans to hold a major news conference in the Washington, DC area on Friday.

The details of the press conference have not yet been released.
