Pete's Fish & Chips reopens after fire

PHOENIX -

One of the valley's oldest restaurants is back in business.

A fire at Pete's Fish and Chips shut the popular spot down for five months, but on Wednesday, they're once again frying up the fish and fries.

The word is out -- Pete's has reopened.  The fast food restaurant is a fixture on 27th Avenue and Van Buren.

"I got my special 4-piece shrimp like I always do..it's so great my girl got her corn dog," said customer Ray Hare.

Loyal customers missing their fish fix are lining up.

"The fish is my favorite and the shrimp," said Liz Zyc.

The restaurant closed last July after a fire gutted the building.

"It was an explosive fire that blew out the front windows and blew off the door and melted everything in the store," said owner Pat Foster.

Foster runs the family-owned business that's been in the valley for six decades.  The fire was a blow for the family and their fans.

"We knew we would rebuild.  This is a family operation..the employees that work here are family.  We didn't get built fast enough," said Foster.

The restaurant has a fresh look.  Everything is brand new, except for the food.  It's always been famous for Pete's special sauce and it's good on just about everything -- it hasn't changed a bit.

The customers are grateful for that -- it's cheap and good -- it's why they keep coming back.

"We've been coming here since I was little, so the one in Buckeye and the one here..we've been coming for a lot of years," said Sylvia Galvan.

It's easy to understand why the family had to reopen.
