LINDENWOLD, N.J. -
The "Quiet Car" pilot program is scheduled to become a permanent fixture on PATCO trains on January 2, officials announced Monday.
Quiet Cars, which is designated on the last cars of a train, will be available to passengers Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
"Our customers survey data led us to two conclusions: The Quiet Car was a keeper, and customers valued it most during rush hours," PATCO General Manager John Rink said in a statement.
The Quiet Car program asks that passengers limit their cell phone use to silent texting and silent games, keep conversations brief and whispered and to play music through headphones at a volume that cannot be heard by other passengers.
PATCO says it has already begun to outfit trains with signs that inform passengers of the program.
The program launched on March 1 and was originally scheduled to end by June 1, but positive customer feedback led to the extension of the pilot program through the end of the year, PATCO said.
