Merrillville man charged with attempted murder in Griffith

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Attempted murder, criminal confinement, escape and criminal recklessness charges were filed Monday against a Merrillville man in a shooting that left two people hospitalized — the victim with gunshot wounds, the suspect with bites from a police dog after he bolted from the hospital.

Wyatt Guy Hogue, 19, of the 5400 block of Chase Street, was charged in Lake Superior Court with attempted murder in the shooting of Jamie Henderson, 45, in his home in the 1000 block of North Elmer Street, Griffith.

Hogue told police he went to the Henderson home at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday because "they were responsible for shooting at my grandmother and the justice system won't do a thing about it," the probable cause affidavit states. Henderson pleaded for his life, but Hogue shot him in the abdomen and leg.

Henderson's son, Riley Henderson, and three other men came out of an adjoining room, while Hogue continued to fire shots from a revolver and threatened to kill Riley Henderson.

The younger Henderson and the other men subdued Hogue, who was taken to Community Hospital in Munster for treatment of what police described as minor injuries. As officers were securing Hogue, he broke free from restraints and fled the hospital, but police and a canine located Hogue several blocks away, hiding in a tree. Hogue was bitten several times and is back in the hospital under 24-hour guard, police said.

Henderson was taken to Community Hospital, then airlifted to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., due to the severity of his injuries.

Hogue, who was placed on probation for one year in August for assisting a criminal, was charged with aggravated battery, two counts of criminal confinement, escape, and four counts of criminal recklessness. The attempted murder charge is punishable by 20 to 50 years.
