NORTHVILLE, Mich. (WJBK) -- 68-year-old Mary Hammon was traveling eastbound on Eight Mile just west of Currie Road heading to a party on Christmas Day when the car she was inside was hit, killing her and both of her passengers.

"It's a tragic moment, and our hearts go out to the family," said Salem Township Fire Chief Jim Rachwel.  "Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do."

Three people were killed and one seriously injured in a head-on collision.  Both drivers were heading to holiday parties to be with loved ones.

Police say Tuesday afternoon 68-year-old Mary Hammon and her passengers, 71-year-old Jackie Hammon and 66-year-old Judith Shedell, were heading eastbound when the driver of a 2004 Ford Taurus crossed the center line heading westbound crashing into Mary Hammon's vehicle.  Mary and Jackie Hammon died at the scene.  Shedell died at the hospital.

The driver of the Taurus was rushed to the hospital and placed in stable condition.  Mary Hammon's Honda Civic was mangled.

"I just realized where the accident was, just past Currie, and that is one of the most dangerous intersections," said Lisa Dukes.  "I almost got hit there myself.  I swerved in order not to get hit, and I think they need to have an actual light there."

"There's been three or four over the summer with fatalities," said Mike Arcuragi.  "They need a light at Eight Mile and Currie."

But until that happens, police are just hoping people slow down.

"It's a two lane, I think it's 55 miles an hour down here, and unfortunately the consequences can be fatal," Rachwel said.
