Lots of options to get home safely after NYE celebrations

Posted: Updated:

Officers from across the valley will hit the streets now through New Year's, cracking down on drunk drivers.

The holiday DUI task force kicked off over thanksgiving, and so far, more than 3,300 people have been arrested. That's about 500 more than last year.

The average blood alcohol level has been .150, nearly twice the legal limit.

This New Year's, partygoers will have a new option to get around the valley.

It's a new smart phone app called Uber. It hooks people up with private drivers instead of taxis.

This is how easy it is -- you click on the app, request a driver and in minutes a black car or SUV comes to pick you up. You don't have to be rich or famous to be picked up in a private car on New Year's Eve.

"Uber is a private driver, we link riders to drivers with a tap of an app," says Gabe Williams of Uber.

Uber is different from a taxi service. Drivers in black cars come to pick you up.

"So the nearest one is 10 minutes away, you can see his face, his name, he's coming in a Lincoln town car, and you can see his license plate."

It's little more expensive than a cab.

You'll pay a $7 pick up fee and $3.25 a mile. That's $1.75 more per mile than a taxi, but with Uber, there's no tipping.

"I decided to try Uber for the first time, opened up my app and hit where I needed to get picked up and I got picked up," says customer Jenny Poon.

Jenny Poon's ride from Sky Harbor to her home in Phoenix was $40.

"I think it's a well needed service in town and I think its cutting edge," says chauffeur Gary Tonkin.

Gary Tonkin is a professional chauffeur. When he has downtime, Uber is a good way to make extra money. He also says drivers go through a pretty extensive background check.

"They go through appearance, they go through the vehicle paperwork insurance, they come out and inspect the vehicle," says Tonkin.
