NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The shooting deaths of two firefighters in Webster, NY have lawmakers calling for tougher penalties for gun owners who allow their weapons to be used in a felony.

NYS Senator Eric Adams and Assemblyman David Weprin held a press conference Sunday to announce a bill that will increase criminal penalties for gun owners who allow their firearms to be used during the commission of a Class A or B felony.

The bill is in response to 24-year-old Dawn Nguyen who is accused of buying an assault rifle and shotgun for 62-year-old William Spengler, a convicted felon who wasn't allowed to own his own firearms.

Those weapons purchased by Nguyen were the ones used by Spengler to shoot four firefighters, two fatally, on Christmas Eve.

The new legislation would make it a felony to knowingly allow someone else to possess an illegal gun that is used in a felony.
