First baby of 2013 born in Brooklyn

Posted: Updated:

A good reason to celebrate the New Year for some couples are welcoming brand new babies in 2013!

Not long after the champagne corks started popping and confetti was tossed into the air, a Brooklyn family welcomed a new addition that was a local hospital's first baby of 2013.

New York Methodist Hospital says that Jungmin Oh and Benjamin Brown of the borough's Park Slope neighborhood became the parents of daughter Gena at 12:54 a.m. Tuesday.

The baby weighs 7 pounds, 2 ounces and is 19.5 inches long.

When most of us were welcoming the New Year, Olivia Rose Espinal, all 7 pounds 5 ounces, 19 and 3/4 inches of her was welcomed into the world by her joyful parents Rosemary and Freddy.

Papa Freddy can still hardly contain his happiness his second daughter made her entrance exactly at midnight.

I'm still in shock. I'm taking it as it comes, I mean I'm getting used to all this and I know she (his daughter Arianna) is happy and trying to get used to these flashes," said Freddy Pena.

Mom Rosemary, who's a nurse, expressed joy that her daughter was safe and healthy but is a bit amazed Olivia came when she did, since she wasn't due for another three days.

"She knew when she was coming, she wanted her grand entrance and got it," said Rosemary.

Olivia, like any star, took all of this hubbub in stride. Her family will tell her the story someday; possibly when they also tell her big sister, 6-year-old Arianna, choose the name Olivia.

Though from Williamsburg, Olivia was born in New York Hospital Queens in Flushing, because mom's doctor is affiliated with it -- a nice way to start the New Year and a nice family portrait.

Over at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, two minutes after Olivia was born a baby boy was delivered. He is six pounds eight ounces, 19 and a half inches tall, he doesn't have a first name yet but his last name is Ajeigbe.

Welcome to 2000 13 Mr. Ajeigbe.

Both babies were born naturally say their respective hospitals and both are healthy. Based on the average numbers, roughly 353,000 babies will be born today worldwide.
