A valley family now has two reasons to celebrate on January 1 – New Year's and their son's birthday.
Malcolm Thomas Rhodes is the valley's first baby born in 2013.
Meet Malcolm. He weighs 6 pounds 13 ounces and measures in at 20 inches.
"And a great big full head of hair!"
While the rest of us were counting down to midnight, Kendra and Ash Rhodes were counting down to bringing their baby boy into the world.
"Probably about 6:00 yesterday afternoon we were pretty sure we weren't going to make it in for 2012 so we starting aiming for being the first baby of 2013 and he was very cooperative," says mom Kendra Rhodes.
"The first time that we were really aware that it was past midnight was some of the nurses brought in some sparkling apple cider and said happy New Year. What, ok? Baby push," says dad Ash Rhodes.
Those nurses were just as proud as the parents to see Malcolm arrive just 4 minutes after midnight.
"It's funny but it's always a big competition between all of our Banner hospitals to see who comes out with the first baby of the New Year so fortunately Banner Thunderbird got it this year," says Rebecca Armendariz of Banner Health.
Baby Malcolm is already making lots of little noises, but mom and dad say he's a happy and healthy new year's baby.
This was the first time in years that Banner Thunderbird delivered the first baby of the year. Malcolm will soon be heading home to the far east valley.
