WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) -- It was a terrifying start to the New Year for a Michigan State Police trooper stopped on the side of the interstate. A taxi plowed into his patrol car, and it's not the first time this trooper has been hit.
"He gets hit about 70 miles an hour in the back end. Didn't even knew it was coming," said Michigan State Police Lieutenant Michael Shaw.
It all happened around 8:20 Tuesday morning on eastbound I-696 near Van Dyke. The trooper had pulled over a driver for speeding. He had a suspended license and was asked to come back to the patrol car. The trooper and the man being ticketed were sitting in the front seats when suddenly they were hit by a man driving a Getter Done taxi cab.
This same trooper was hit just one month ago. In fact, this was the tenth time he has been hit in his 23 years with State Police.
"We're more worried about getting hit by a car then we are about getting shot. I mean, that's how serious it is for us," Shaw explained.
The trauma team at Beaumont Hospital worked on both the trooper, as well as another individual in the accident. Both are in fair condition and should be okay.
"It's a pretty high impact crash, but the EMS personnel did a great job getting the patients here. We took good care of them. They seem to be doing okay at this time," said Dr. Patrick Pettengill.
The taxi driver did have a passenger in his cab. Police will be interviewing both men as part of the investigation, trying to find out why the taxi driver swerved into the trooper.
Meantime, Shaw had this reminder for drivers when it comes to emergency vehicles.
"Move over. If you can't move over, slow down. That's going to save a lot of [people's] lives. I mean, this could've been a lot worse."
Everyone involved in the accident is expected to recover.
