SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

A man tries to sell his 2002 BMW online, but ends up getting robbed at gunpoint by a potential buyer -- and it happened right in front of his workplace.

Police say when the suspect arrived at the victim's job in near 78th Street and Greenway-Hayden Loop, he took the BMW for a test drive.

Upon returning to the workplace, the suspect produced a handgun, pointed it at the 57-year-old victim, and demanded the paperwork for the vehicle from him. The suspect then fled the scene, according to the police report.

Investigators found the vehicle at an apartment complex in the 5000 block of N. 55th Avenue in Phoenix.  A short time later, detectives caught up with the suspect and took him into custody.

23-year-old Alton Peoples faces aggravated assault, armed robbery and auto theft charges.

Police say safety should be very important when buying or selling items using online classifieds and shared these tips:

  • Meet in a public place to conduct the transaction
  • Let others know what you are doing and where you are going
  • Take someone with you to conduct the transaction
  • Have your cell phone handy in case of emergencies
