Crimes stats released Thursday show a total of 411 homicides last year in the city of Detroit, up from 377 in 2011. The numbers include 386 criminal homicides and 25 justifiable homicides.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- What a day it has been. The city of Detroit is making national headlines again in a way that we don't want -- one of the nation's deadliest cities.
It's my view that before we complain about the police, before we complain about the economy, before we look for a fall guy or city department to blame, we should lock all of our doors, pull the shades down on our windows and look around and consider have we ever discussed with our family, with our children, nieces and nephews, our grand kids, the value of a life.
Have you ever had that talk with your family about what it means to live and what is lost when someone is gone?
Do you have symbols of hope, maybe of religion, maybe just pictures of people in your home who you've loved who are no longer there, and if so, do you celebrate their lives by remembering what they stood for, how they lived, also the emptiness that their absence left?
The crime problem may be part gun, part economy, part leadership or lack of leadership, but it's my view that the solution is right there behind our closed doors with each and every one of us leading by example, teaching lessons of life and setting a standard.
