Superstorm Sandy

Rebuilding Belmar | Mayor Matt Doherty

Posted: Updated:

Rebuilding the boardwalk along the Jersey Shore after Superstorm Sandy is about to get underway without the help of the federal government.

Construction of the Belmar boardwalk is set to begin in mid-January.

Congress has not approved the relief funding the town is hoping to receive to pay for the new boards. Washington will vote on a small part of the bill later Thursday, but it doesn't help pay Belmar's bills.

Belmar officials say they can't wait to build, because the town needs the boardwalk to be finished before Memorial Day, but rebuilding while waiting for federal money could mean higher interest payments for the town.

Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty talked about the rebuilding.
