Wreck closes westbound I-10 north of Casa Grande

Posted: Updated:

Westbound traffic on Interstate 10 south of the Phoenix area is being delayed and detoured because of a serious accident involving 2 tractor-trailer rigs and a pickup truck.

The accident occurred Friday morning north of Casa Grande, and authorities are advising Phoenix-bound motorists to expect serious delays and to consider alternative routes.

According to Department of Safety Officer Carrick Cook, a Ford F-250 traveling eastbound on I-10 experienced a tire blowout. The driver lost control of the truck, traveled through the median, tried to correct, but went into oncoming traffic.

The driver then hit a semi head-on. In a chain reaction, another semi rear-ended the first semi, causing its trailer to roll over.

The driver of the truck was transported to Maricopa Medical Center in critical condition. The drivers of the big rigs are okay.

DPS says that one of the semis involved was transporting 44,000 pounds of formic acid, and it spilled in the crash. The acid was properly stowed and the driver has the correct documentation, but due to the hazardous nature of the acid, cleanup and containment could take some time.

ADOT says there's no estimate when I-10's westbound lanes will reopen. Eastbound traffic is moving, but very slowly.

A detour takes drivers off westbound I-10 north of Casa Grande at State Route 387, towards Florence. Drivers can take Route 387 to State Route 87. That will take them to the Phoenix area via Chandler and Sun Lakes.
