Pipe bomb found in Phoenix grocery store parking lot

Posted: Updated:

A pipe bomb was found at a parking lot of a grocery store near 7th Avenue and Osborn Road on Saturday morning.

Using a robotic arm, police detonated the bomb behind a dumpster, next to the store.

The blast caught some by surprise.

As of Saturday night, police say they don't have a suspect.

Just like a giant pair of tweezers, the Phoenix Police Department's robotic arm gently picked up a pipebomb that was found laying in the parking lot of the Safeway at 7th Avenue and Osborn Road.

The robot carried the bomb to a bucket behind a dumpster in the parking lot, where police detonated it.

Nicole Sinu says the bomb was three parking spaces from her car. She spotted it while walking into the store.

"It's on the ground, I just pass by I-- 'look everybody look'," said Sinu.

The pipebomb was found in an empty parking spot. A grocery store worker says once customers became concerned, police were called. They roped off an entire area, leaving shoppers unable to get to their cars.

"You couldn't get anywhere within this sort of four or five rows of cars," said Richard Allen, a grocery shopper.

"You see there's the food, I have some more food inside, and I am stuck here," said Sinu.

It took about an hour before police detonated the bomb and let shoppers go back to their cars.

No one was injured.

Police don't know who put the pipebomb in the parking lot or why.

"It's really sad, you go to a store on a Saturday afternoon and you're confronted with this sort of situation, kind of the new normal I guess," said Allen.

We're told police are searching through store surveillance video to see if it shows the parking lot or anyone leaving the pipebomb there.

Investigators say they don't know of any other pipebomb incidents like this in the area.
