Police: Phoenix officer shoots, kills shoplifting suspect at Walmart

Updated:
PHOENIX -

Police say a 39-year-old man was shot and killed by a Phoenix police officer after shoplifting from a Walmart on Saturday.

While watching store surveillance cameras, a loss prevention officer allegedly saw Chuckie Stowers using a knife to remove a BB gun pistol from its packing at a Walmart store near 53rd Avenue and Indian School Road.

The officer called 911 and told police the man was hiding the gun in a shopping cart under a red jacket.

As Stowers was leaving the store, police say additional officers arrived and commanded him to stop and put his hands on his head. The man ignored officers and took off running through the parking lot.

While running, officers say Stowers pulled out a pistol from his waistband and pointed it at them.

At least three officers shot at the suspect. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Many customers were unable to get to their cars in the parking lot because they were in part of the crime scene.
