"The young man already took the jacket off," says Barbara Carreker. "The guy just started shooting anyway."

The mother of 18 year old Demetri Green stood clutching her son's picture the morning after the teenager was shot and killed. It happened around 9:30pm Friday near Warren and Somerset. Carreker says Demetri and a friend were walking to the store when a man with a gun jumped out of a van and tried to rob her son's friend.

"He worked at a $7 an hour job. They were trying to rob him for a leather coat, " Carreker said. "He took the coat off and threw it down. They opened fire with an AK-47 and started shooting at him."

The two victims ran. We're told Demetri's friend, who had a concealed weapon, returned fire. He got away. But, when he turned around Demetri was on the ground. His mother says he was shot in the head.

"My son just graduated from Southeastern with a 4.0," she said choking back tears. "He was in an all city string bank. He's on two CD's. He and his brother played with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra."

The teen would have celebrated his 19th birthday in February.  This latest shooting comes amid grim crime statistics for Detroit. 411 homicides in 2012 and 2013 is off to a violent start. Thursday night, Petty Officer Terrence Hill, Jr., 24, was shot and killed in a robbery on Detroit's west side. He was home on leave from the Navy. Early Friday morning, an honor student, True Whitsey, 18, was also robbed and murdered on the west side. Victims family members are crying out for help.

"This violence in Detroit has to stop," Carreker said. "It don't help that police stations are closing at 4 o'clock because all they're doing is advertising to the criminals out here that you have free reign to shoot and kill and maim whoever you want. They don't care about anybody."

So far, no arrests in these recent crimes. CrimeStoppers is offering rewards in the various cases. Call 1-800-SPEAKUP (1-800-773-2587) with information. You can remain anonymous.
