PHILADELPHIA -

A 26-year-old man died Saturday night after police say he was beaten to death by a group of men.

The assault happened in the area of the 500 block of North 55th Street around 10 p.m.

On Sunday, Philadelphia police identified the victim as Akeel Prout. It's not yet clear what caused the assault.

Police say Akeel was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 10:30 p.m.

The Associated Press reports Prout was a murder witness in an October 2011 homicide of a school teacher.

Police have not made any arrests.
