FENTON, Mich. (WJBK) -- 15-year-old Joshua Polehna was in the midst of his freshman year at Lake Fenton High School, but the ninth grader became ill over winter break and had to be hospitalized. Sadly, he died over the weekend from what is being described as flu-like symptoms.
"The family had been doing everything they could to assist him," said Father David Harvey. "They were in contact with the doctor immediately. They responded immediately."
Harvey will lead funeral services for Polehna on Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Visitation and a vigil are scheduled for Wednesday at Sharp Funeral Home.
The teen leaves behind his parents, a brother and sister and other relatives. We're told he was active in marching band, track and robotics.
"He was admitted to Genesys emergency and then he transferred from Genesys to Beaumont and from Beaumont to Mott Children's and that's where he died Saturday," Harvey explained.
Just over a week ago, 44-year-old Kirk Beauchamp, a father of five from Fenton, also died from flu-like symptoms, but we're told he had underlying health problems.
The superintendent for Lake Fenton School did not want to talk on camera, but in a letter parents on the district's website, he said the health department is investigating both deaths and there appears to be no connection between them.
The letter also says that, according to the health department, 30,000 people die from the flu every year. Symptoms include high fever, headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny nose and muscle aches.
The superintendent is also advising people to consider flu shots. A Fenton Rite Aid said there has been a steady stream of people coming in to get them in recent days.
