ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -
St. Paul police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a woman whose body was found in a White Bear Lake garage.
Monday afternoon, police found the woman's body inside a garage at a home on the 2200 block of 8th Street after the homeowner called to say he believed the victim's body may be in his garage.
Steven Roger Johnson, 34, was arrested Monday night after investigating officers received information that led them to Johnson's home on the 1400 block of Sheldon Street in St. Paul. Police say Johnson had filed a missing person's report for his wife at 9 a.m. that same day.
Johnson was arrested without incident and booked into the Ramsey County Jail on suspicion of murder.
On Tuesday afternoon, police identified the victim as Manya Jewel Johnson, 32 of St. Paul, adding that she was the suspect's wife and mother to their young son.
Investigators said there is no indication any acts of violence connected with this case took place in White Bear Lake, explaining that they believe Johnson hid the body inside a friend's garage.
During the first sweep of the garage, police did not find anything; however, during a second search, Manya Johnson's body was discovered under a blanket.
Neighbors told FOX 9 News the medical examiner did not remove the body on a stretcher. Instead, they reported seeing several plastic storage containers, which raises the possibility that Johnson may have dismembered his wife's body before hiding it.
Johnson was previously convicted of aiding and abetting criminal sexual conduct in the kidnapping and rape of a woman in Coon Rapids in 1996. He was released from prison four years ago and had been on supervised release that was supposed to end in 2018.
Charges in the case are expected by noon on Wednesday.
