CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A bank robber who made off with less than $290 cash was nabbed when she returned to the scene of her crime a month later for a second bite of the apple, prosecutors say.
The short-lived, undistinguished stick-up career of Sherri Wilson, 55, began when she robbed the TCF Bank branch inside a Jewel-Osco supermarket at South Ashland Avenue and West 94th Street Dec. 6, according to a federal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago.
The unusual method included asking bank staff to open her an account, it's alleged. After she was ushered into an office by the bank teller, she said she didn't have any I.D. and left, only to return minutes later with a note that read "this is a hold up ... put all the money in the envelope," prosecutors say.
An audit showed she allegedly made off with $282.95.
On Friday, Wilson, described as 5-feet-3 and 255 to 270 pounds, returned to the bank and again asked to open an account before again leaving because she had no I.D., the complaint states. This time, staff saw her write her ransom note as she walked around the supermarket's bakery and floral department, it's alleged.
Recognized by a teller when she returned to the counter to rob the bank again moments later, she was arrested at the scene by Chicago Police.
She later confessed to the December heist, it's alleged.
Wilson was released on her own recognizance Monday by Magistrate Judge Sheila Finnegan.
