How many times a day do you go to the fridge or a soda machine and grab a can of soda? The fact is, Americans are drinking more soda than ever before, but people who drink a lot could be at risk for depression.
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health studied over 250,000 people and found those who drank four or more cans of soda per day were 30 percent more likely to develop depression than those who did not drink soda.
Some other sugary drinks were even worse.
"If you were drinking four or more sodas a day you were 30 percent more likely to develop depression than those who didn't drink soda. If you drank fruit punch, 38 percent more likely, if you had four or more a day, which is a lot of this stuff," said Dr. Mike McKee, Ph.D with the Cleveland Clinic.
People who drank diet soda had even more risk of depression.
"What I think will surprise most people is the fact that the diet drinks were even worse in their impact than the plain sugar drinks, so you were more likely to get depression," said McKee.
So, what do you do?
Researchers say cutting down on soda or sugary drinks should help.
They also discovered people who drink four cups of coffee per day were 10 percent less likely to develop depression.
The group that drinks the most soft drinks are men in their 20's; they average a half gallon a day. That's about five cans of soda or other soft drink.
