CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The accomplices of an alleged carjacker fatally shot by Chicago Police on Monday were charged with his murder on Wednesday.

Akeem Clarke, 22, of the 7600 block of South Essex Avenue; and Martel Odum, 23, of the 0-100 block of East 69th Street, were each charged with one count of first-degree murder, two counts of felony robbery and one count of felony vehicular hijacking on Wednesday, police said.

Clarke was also wanted on a warrant, police said.

Clarke, Odum and 17-year-old Cedrick Chatman allegedly stole a muscle car at gunpoint Monday afternoon on the South Side, authorities said.

Police first spotted Chatman driving the stolen gray Dodge Charger with out-of-state plates west on East 75th Street about 1:45 p.m. Monday, Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said.

Two officers followed the car and approached it on foot when it was boxed-in by traffic at a stop light near the corner of East 75th and South Jeffery Boulevard, Camden said.

After ordering Chatman out of the car, police say they saw him reach for an object with his right hand before opening the door and fleeing on foot, Camden said.

During the ensuing foot chase, Chatman turned toward officers with what they incorrectly believed was a gun and the officers shot him, Camden said.

An officer gets "that mental image of somebody who takes a vehicle at gunpoint and later he's reaching for something in the car -- the picture is pretty well painted," Camden said.

Chatman, of the 7600 block of South Essex Avenue, died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. A Tuesday autopsy ruled his death a homicide.
