PHOENIX -

Arizona legislators and community leaders discussed new gun policies at the state capitol Thursday.

Democratic Senator Linda Lopez proposed legislation to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals in an effort to prevent gun violence in our state.

The proposed legislation focuses on universal background checks and banning high capacity magazines.

"What happened in Sandy Hook, what happens in many of the other mass shootings that we've seen across this country, to understand that if we can limit the amount of ammunition that an individual has in a clip we can stop a lot of bloodshed," says State Sen. Linda Lopez, Tucson Democrat.

Of course, her plan is expected to face a lot of opposition in Arizona's Republican controlled legislature.
