NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

An off-duty Suffolk County police officer died in an early morning crash.  It happened at 3:33 a.m. on Route 25 near Siracusa Boulevard in Commack.

Police say that Patrick Curley, 40, of Huntington, was driving an SUV westbound when he hit a Winters Brothers garbage truck that was backing out of a business.

The driver of the garbage truck, James Jarosch, 59, was not hurt.   Jarosch was issued summonses for unsafe backing and equipment violation after the truck was inspected.

Curley was a 17 year veteran of the force and was an officer in the second precinct.
