Parents are calling for tighter security, after a 13-year old brought a gun to a Southeast Side elementary school.
Marsh Elementary held an emergency meeting with the principal Friday morning, to discuss the incident.
Parents said the Marsh Elementary school auditorium was packed, as hundreds came to air their anxieties about a 13-year old storing a gun and ammunition in his locker, inside the school.
The principal at Marsh invited parents to build better communications, along with tighter security.
"The security guard does a great job," Jason Vasquez said. "But he's one man, we need more."
"Times have changed," Rafael Merciel said. "This is what we need now."
"I worry after what happened in Connecticut," another parent named Maria said. "They're going to have tighter security."
Children waited in line for about 30 minutes past the 7:45 a.m. bell, to go through the metal detector at the front door.
It's one of the new policies put in place for the school, which has a preschool program and goes up to 8th grade. Visitors have to show a photo ID and sign in and out.
On Wednesday, the 13-year old boy was caught playing with bullets outside. Under questioning, he allegedly told authorities about the gun and bullets in his locker.
Parents were upset that a child could so easily bring a weapon to school.
Police said the gun belonged to the boy's grandfather. He was released to the custody of his mother and it's not known if he will return to school.
