Kids typically aren't the ones to say, "Let's go mom and dad, get off the couch and let's hit the gym." But one Phoenix 6th grader did just that, inspiring his whole family to change their lifestyle and get healthy.
Orange Theory Fitness is dedicated to help you fight the fat and make fitness a priority.
But when Jackson Schumacher walked through the door, let's just say he wasn't the typical clientele.
"When I used to do baseball I could eat whatever I want and I would just not gain any weight," says Jackson. "There wasn't anything keeping me in balance so I had to do something because I wasn't doing anything."
Jackson's just 12, but he wanted to drop a few pounds, so he's the one who dragged his parents to the gym and not the other way around.
It really was the opposite of how it usually works. Jackson was the one riding by on his bicycle with some friends and he told his family "we have got to get in shape."
"I kept asking my mom if we could go and she finally said yes," says Jackson.
Mom said yes, so did dad, and now the whole family is trying to find time every day to work out together.
"He's a very mature 12-year-old and you don't find that as often with a lot of kids," says Daren Parks of Orange Theory Fitness.
Daren Parks doesn't see this kind of thing a whole lot, but Arizona tips the scales at number 15 for national childhood obesity. Jackson's example would be a welcome wave of change.
"He came by during presales and he was interested in what we had going on, for the most part I was marketing when I was talking to him, more about oh take this information home to your parents."
"It's fun and it keeps me in shape and if I don't have time I always make time," says Jackson.
Together, the family has already lost a significant amount of weight.
