Teachers Rally Against School Closing

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Parents and teachers are calling on the city to save a South Philadelphia elementary school.

They held signs outside Abigail Vare Elementary School in Pennsport on Monday morning to gain support from the community.

Vare is one of 37 school buildings slated for closure at the end of the year. The city has tried to close the school twice before with no success.

Parents say if Vare closes, their children will be forced to attend schools farther away from home, putting their safety at risk. The 360 students at Vare will have to relocate to a school at Fifth and Federal streets if Vare closes, an option that may not be viable for all of them.

"We are out here, really for the safety of our children," one teacher said, also speaking of the uncertainty teachers at Vare feel about their jobs if the school is forced to close.

"Are we closing, and why are we closing if we have such a great building and program here?" she asked.

The Pennsport Community Association is also supporting efforts to keep Vare open.
